The 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy
The 2026 Winter Games, hosted in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, are a significant event for Ukrainian athletes. On February 7, 2026, Ukrainian freestyle skier Kateryna Kotsar competed in the slopestyle qualification. The 25-year-old athlete scored 36.03 points on her first run and improved to 50.78 points on her second. With these combined results, Kateryna placed 14th, just outside the top 12 spots required to advance to the final. The women's slopestyle final is scheduled for February 9, 2026. In addition to slopestyle, Kateryna Kotsar is also set to compete in the big air event.
The Olympic Opening Ceremony
Ukraine's participation in the opening ceremony was also notable. The Ukrainian flag was carried into Milan's San Siro stadium by 21-year-old short track speed skater Yelyzaveta Sydoriko, who is making her Olympic debut. Yelyzaveta remarked:
'I didn't think I would be the one entrusted with carrying the flag. There are many more famous athletes in Ukraine, but I am sure my father is proud of me—both for being here and for representing the country.' - Yelyzaveta Sydoriko
Figure skater Kyrylo Marsak, who competes in the men's singles event, also participated in the Milan segment of the ceremony. In Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Ukrainian flag bearer was Vladyslav Heraskevych, the first Ukrainian skeleton athlete in Olympic history.
Ukrainian athletes have thus showcased their talents on the international stage at the 2026 Games. This participation underscores the resilience of Ukrainian sport, providing a moment of global recognition amid the nation's ongoing challenges. The selection of young athletes like Sydoriko and Heraskevych as flag bearers highlights a promising new generation for Ukraine in winter sports.
