Cross-Country Skier Erik Valnes Joins Norwegian Football Club

Norwegian cross-country skier and Olympic champion Erik Valnes has signed a contract with Mellembydg Football Club, which competes in Norway's fourth division. Valnes, 29, has no plans to retire from skiing, viewing football as a complementary method for maintaining his physical fitness. His primary focus remains on training for next year's World Championships in Falun. This move highlights a growing trend of elite athletes diversifying their training across different sports.

Valnes's Impressive Sporting Career

Erik Valnes won an Olympic gold medal in the team sprint at the 2022 Games, partnering with Johannes Høsflot Klæbo. He also boasts six World Cup victories and three World Championship gold medals in cross-country skiing. His last official football match was in 2017 for the club Sørreisa, where his team won 11:1, but Valnes suffered a broken collarbone during the game.

Mellembydg's player-coach, Adrian Nyimo Melseth, commented on the signing:

“Valnes is the perfect addition, primarily due to his phenomenal endurance.” - Adrian Nyimo Melseth

Valnes is expected to feature in the team's upcoming matches, offering him a novel competitive experience in a different athletic arena.

By pursuing both sports, Erik Valnes demonstrates his versatility as an athlete, maintaining his status in world-class skiing while exploring a new challenge in football. His dual pursuit could draw increased attention to both sports and serve as an example for other athletes seeking to broaden their athletic horizons while staying at peak condition.
