The Impact of Stress on Cancer

Oncologist Anton Shkiryak links stress to the worsening of cancer, forecasting a significant rise in cases by 2040. He identifies stress as a distinct illness that exacerbates chronic conditions like cancer. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the cancer situation has deteriorated, and the expert predicts the number of cases in Ukraine will not decline before 2040. This warning comes amid a global increase in cancer diagnoses, highlighting a major public health challenge.

Stress heightens the risk of cancer progression.

"The trend is that a person in the modern world experiences a great cascade of different emotional swings, which lead to disruptions in the endocrine system and in nutrition and dietetics. A person under stress cannot eat properly," notes Anton Shkiryak.
He emphasizes that such experiences can disturb metabolic processes, a known risk factor for cancer development. While stress is not a direct cause of cancer, it unequivocally increases the likelihood of its occurrence.

Global Trends and Risk Factors

According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, the number of cancer cases worldwide is expected to increase by 50%, and possibly up to 55%, by 2040. This indicates that cancer remains a pressing issue not only in Ukraine but on a global scale. Key factors influencing the increased risk of cancer include:

  • stress
  • environmental factors
  • pace of life
  • lack of awareness

Conversely, research from CU Boulder points to factors that may reduce the risk of cancer and chronic diseases. These include increased fiber intake, more physical activity, and lower stress levels. Therefore, lifestyle changes can be a crucial step in combating cancer, especially in conditions where stress and emotional turmoil have become an integral part of life.

The rise in cancer cases linked to stress is a cause for concern internationally, not just in Ukraine. In the modern era, where stressful situations have become commonplace, it is vital to focus on preventive methods and implement lifestyle changes that can lower the risk of developing cancer. Public awareness campaigns and educational programs can help people understand the importance of mental health and its impact on physical well-being.
