OpenAI Pushes AI Boundaries in Modernizing Outdated Software

On October 20, 2023, OpenAI unveiled significant upgrades to its AI models, enhancing their ability to update legacy software by translating code from older programming languages to contemporary ones. The GPT-6.1 Sol model impressively achieved 97.9% accuracy in code migration tests under high computational effort. This breakthrough marks an important step forward in leveraging artificial intelligence to modernize applications widely used in sectors such as banking and finance.

Performance Highlights from Model Evaluations

The evaluation process involved comprehensive hidden tests that compared the migrated code’s output with the original programs. At a lower computational intensity, GPT-6.1 Sol still delivered 86.6% accuracy, a dramatic improvement over its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol, which managed just 5.4%. Similarly, the GPT-6 Astra model demonstrated notable gains, with its average MultiLangBench test pass rate increasing to 87.4% from 26.8% achieved by GPT-5.6 Sol. Significant progress was observed in migrating languages like Fortran, Visual Basic, and COBOL. For instance, Fortran’s pass rate surged from 21.4% to 83.5%, while COBOL improved from 10.9% to 72.1%.

Despite these advances, OpenAI acknowledged ongoing challenges faced by developers working with old programming languages. Many of these languages suffer from incomplete documentation and unique syntax rules preserved only in legacy source code. The company noted:

“Developers encountered difficulties using AI to handle legacy languages.”

This issue is particularly critical for COBOL, which remains integral to financial infrastructure where calculation accuracy is paramount.

In terms of cost efficiency, the GPT-6 Luna model achieved a 40.3% average score on MultiLangBench while operating at roughly 78% lower expense compared to GPT-5.6 Sol. The average cost per sample was $0.77 for GPT-6 Luna versus $3.48 for GPT-5.6 Sol. Nevertheless, migrating mission-critical systems continues to be a complex task that demands thorough validation before deployment.

The enhancements in GPT-6.1 Sol and other OpenAI models underscore the crucial need to adapt legacy technologies to meet modern standards, especially within financial systems where software precision and dependability are vital. Although improved code migration accuracy promises to streamline legacy system upgrades, challenges linked to scarce documentation and the intricacies of older programming languages remain. These findings highlight the ongoing necessity for advancing AI integration in software engineering.
