OpenAI to Introduce Age Verification for ChatGPT Users in the EU

OpenAI планує впровадити механізм перевірки віку для користувачів ChatGPT в країнах ЄС.

Age Verification for ChatGPT Users

OpenAI is implementing an age verification system for users of its ChatGPT service. The new rules are set to take effect in European Union countries within the coming weeks. The system will use predictive age analysis, examining the topics of conversations and the time of day a user accesses the chat. A similar approach is already employed by the Discord platform.

Restrictions for Underage Users

Potential underage users will face restrictions on access to certain types of content. Sensitive content subject to limitation may include:

  • Material depicting violence;
  • Information that could encourage dangerous behavior;
  • Role-playing scenarios of a sexual, romantic, or violent nature;
  • Topics related to extreme beauty standards, unhealthy eating, or disparagement of physical appearance.

Adult users will be able to verify their age using facial recognition via a video selfie or by uploading an official document. OpenAI states that the data used for age verification will be deleted seven days after the verification process is complete. These measures are part of OpenAI's efforts to ensure the safe use of its products in compliance with European legislative requirements. This move reflects a broader industry trend of tech companies facing increased regulatory scrutiny, particularly concerning user safety and data privacy.

The introduction of age verification for ChatGPT highlights the growing focus of technology companies on safety and responsible product use. This decision also underscores the importance of adhering to EU legislation, which governs minors' access to online content. The implementation of such measures could serve as a model for other platforms seeking to protect young people from potentially harmful material.
