Briefing the Hungarian Delegation
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has briefed a delegation dispatched to Kyiv. The group's primary objectives are to assess the operational status of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline and to secure meetings with Ukrainian government officials. The delegation, led by State Secretary for Energy Gábor Czepek, is not on an official state visit and has no formal meetings scheduled.
A video of Orbán's discussion with the team was published on social media. In it, the Prime Minister instructed Deputy Energy Minister Gábor Czepek to personally inspect the 'Druzhba' pipeline and to attempt arranging talks with Ukrainian officials. The delegation's composition includes:
- an oil industry specialist;
- a senior official with international relations experience;
- an energy market analyst.
Prior Talks in Bratislava
Before traveling to Ukraine, the delegation held discussions in Bratislava with representatives of the Slovak energy market and government. Orbán stated:
“We wanted to resolve the situation together with them. We are not seeking conflict, but a solution, and we want to help them with that.” - Viktor Orbán
The Hungarian side expressed a readiness to cooperate, despite the delegation's unofficial status.
This development underscores the critical nature of energy relations between Hungary and Ukraine, particularly concerning the 'Druzhba' pipeline, a major piece of regional energy infrastructure. The Druzhba pipeline is one of the world's longest, historically supplying Russian oil to parts of Central Europe. The unofficial nature of the visit may reflect the sensitive diplomatic context, but the stated willingness to collaborate suggests both parties are seeking a constructive dialogue to manage their energy links.
