Introducing the Humanoid Robot HELIOS

On May 22 at 11:00 AM, Orbit Robotics unveiled HELIOS, a humanoid robot engineered for use on space stations and orbital facilities. This cutting-edge machine features four arms and is designed without conventional legs. Instead of heavy rigid actuators, HELIOS relies on a cable-driven system, giving it enhanced flexibility and a lighter build for performing tasks.

According to Orbit Robotics, astronauts currently spend about 35% of their working hours on equipment maintenance. A single cargo unloading operation aboard a space station can take nearly 50 hours of crew time. With each hour of an astronaut's work valued at roughly $140,000, there is a clear need for innovative solutions like HELIOS, which can significantly cut down on both time and resource costs.

Design and Capabilities of HELIOS

The robot's design places motors near the shoulder joints, transmitting force through cables and pulleys. This approach reduces the robot's overall weight and boosts its functionality in the space environment. To support remote operation and autonomous testing, Orbit Robotics is also developing the IKARUS platform. This system will enable efficient control of robots under the challenging conditions of space missions.
