Introducing a Streamlined Process for Accessing Test Strips in Ukraine
The Ministry of Health in Ukraine has launched a new digital procedure for obtaining glucose meter test strips. Replacing the previous electronic prescription (e-Prescription) system, the new e-Request is an electronic document designed specifically for medical devices and rehabilitation aids. This update aims to simplify access for patients who need regular blood sugar monitoring.
Previously, patients received test strips through e-Prescriptions, which were primarily intended for medications. Now, endocrinologists, family doctors, therapists, and pediatricians can issue an e-Request when there is an active treatment plan. This new process applies to people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes who require insulin therapy.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Receiving Test Strips
The procedure using the e-Request involves several clear steps:
- The patient visits an endocrinologist, who creates a treatment plan and enters the corresponding prescription into Ukraine’s electronic health system (eHealth).
- Following this, the patient obtains an e-Request and must check notifications for the e-Request number and redemption code.
- The test strips can then be collected at pharmacies participating in the “Affordable Medicines” program by providing the pharmacist with the e-Request number and code.
For those needing rehabilitation aids, patients should consult a doctor or rehabilitation specialist who will assess their needs and specify the required device. The e-Request for rehabilitation aids includes a code in the notification or a printed memo describing the item. It’s important to note that this e-Request does not replace documents needed to receive aids through the state social welfare system. To obtain these aids free of charge, patients must apply via social protection agencies, administrative service centers (CNAP), territorial branches of the Social Protection Fund for Persons with Disabilities, or the Social Portal.
Overall, the introduction of the e-Request simplifies access to both test strips and rehabilitation aids for diabetic patients while maintaining existing social support mechanisms.
This innovative approach reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for people living with diabetes, marking a significant advancement in healthcare services.
By making the process more accessible and efficient, the e-Request system is expected to improve timely treatment and monitoring, which can reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
