Freezing Rain Causes Havoc Across Western Ukraine

A severe ice storm has created hazardous conditions for drivers and pedestrians across four regions in Western Ukraine. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi revealed he personally fell twice on the ice in a single day, highlighting the treacherous nature of the weather. The Lviv, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Chernivtsi oblasts have all issued a Level I (yellow) danger warning due to the widespread glaze ice. This type of winter weather, where rain freezes on contact with cold surfaces, is particularly dangerous for travel.

Lviv's municipal services are operating on an emergency footing in an effort to clear the roads. However, according to Sadovyi, the situation remains challenging.

'Municipal services are working around the clock and doing everything possible' – Andriy Sadovyi.

Meteorologists warn that dangerous road conditions will persist throughout the day, likely leading to major traffic disruptions and an increased risk for pedestrians.

Andriy Sadovyi urged citizens to exercise extreme caution: 'But the situation on the roads is truly difficult. Please be careful!' The pervasive ice observed across the regions presents a serious challenge for all road users.

Advice for Drivers and Pedestrians

The ongoing ice storm in Western Ukraine underscores the critical importance of adhering to traffic rules and moving with care, especially as weather conditions deteriorate. Local authorities and utility crews continue to work on mitigating the impacts, but weather forecasts suggest the situation could worsen, further affecting road safety.

  • Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
  • Follow all guidance from local emergency services.
