Ice Storm in Khmelnytskyi Region Leaves Over 140 Settlements Without Power

Крижані опади в Хмельницькому регіоні призвели до знеструмлення понад 140 населених пунктів.

Power Supply Issues in Khmelnytskyi Region

A severe ice storm in Ukraine's Khmelnytskyi region has caused a major spike in emergency power outages. As of January 27, 2026, utility crews have reported power cuts affecting more than 140 settlements, with 14 of these experiencing partial blackouts. The outages are primarily due to fallen trees and damaged power lines, which are severely hampering repair and restoration efforts.

Deteriorating weather conditions across the region have created an extremely challenging environment for energy workers. The local utility company, 'Khmelnytskoblenergo', states the situation remains difficult, as adverse weather continues to obstruct the essential work needed to restore electricity.

Scheduled Blackouts and Wider Consequences

Across all regions of Ukraine, including Khmelnytskyi, scheduled hourly power cuts and capacity limits for industrial consumers are currently in effect. Several other regions have also implemented emergency blackouts. This incident highlights the broader, critical strain on Ukraine's national energy grid, which has been operating under severe pressure for an extended period. The national energy situation has been critical for years, particularly following sustained Russian attacks on infrastructure, which forced the implementation of much stricter rationing schedules.

The current crisis in Khmelnytskyi reflects the wider systemic challenges facing Ukraine's power network. Continuous damage to infrastructure from both severe weather and military action underscores the vulnerability of the energy grid. These combined military threats and environmental factors create additional obstacles for utility crews, complicating restoration work and threatening the stability of the entire energy system. A prolonged combination of such conditions risks extending the duration of blackouts in this region and others across Ukraine.
