New Study Links Weight-Loss Drugs Ozempic and Wegovy to Three Medical Conditions

Нові дослідження виявили зв'язок препаратів для зниження ваги, таких як Озепмік і Вегові, з трьома медичними захворюваннями.

Investigating the Impact of Weight-Loss Medications

A five-year study has identified a connection between the use of the weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy and an elevated risk of developing certain diseases. The analysis examined data from 73,000 patients, comparing those who used these medications with those who did not.

The findings revealed that individuals using these drugs for weight loss faced a higher risk of developing:

  • osteoporosis, with a 0.9% increased risk;
  • gout, with a 0.8% increased risk;
  • osteomalacia, with a 0.1% increased risk.

Importantly, the study clarified that Ozempic and Wegovy are not associated with disorders of calcium production. No causal link was found between taking these drugs and impaired calcium metabolism.

The Critical Need for a Holistic Weight-Loss Strategy

The research also highlighted that weight loss achieved solely through medication, without accompanying physical exercise and dietary control, may lead to a rapid reversal of Ozempic's effects. These results underscore the necessity of a comprehensive approach to weight management, incorporating activity and nutrition, while also pointing to potential risks tied to the use of these drugs.

These findings have raised concerns among healthcare providers and patients considering Ozempic and Wegovy for weight control. It is crucial for patients to be informed of the potential risks and the need to combine pharmaceutical treatment with physical activity and a healthy diet to achieve lasting weight-loss results. This study, focusing on widely publicized GLP-1 receptor agonists, emphasizes the requirement for further investigation into the long-term consequences of using these medications.
