A Protective Side Effect?

New research from Taiwan suggests that a popular weight-loss medication might also help protect against a major cause of vision loss. These drugs are already widely prescribed for diabetes and weight management, and their potential effects on other conditions are attracting increasing research interest. Analyzing health records of more than 157,000 patients, scientists observed an 18% lower risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) among those taking GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Ozempic, compared with people using other anti-obesity treatments. For certain unspecified AMD subtypes, the risk reduction reached 30%.

The analysis, published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, included adults aged 60 and older with excess weight but without type 2 diabetes. Two equal groups of 79,000 people each were formed: one took GLP-1 drugs (liraglutide, semaglutide, tirzepatide), while the other used alternative weight-loss medications. Over a median follow-up period of one to two and a half years, the GLP-1 group showed a significantly lower overall AMD risk.

What the Numbers Show

Researchers at Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan, led by clinical pharmacology expert Cheng-Hsi-en Hung, also found that a one-unit increase in body mass index (1 kg/m²) was associated with a 2% higher AMD risk, echoing earlier findings. The authors stress that further clinical trials are needed to clarify the potential protective mechanism. The article is available under DOI 10.1111/dom.70910.

These results could reshape thinking about obesity treatments because they link metabolic health to eye health. A reduced likelihood of AMD among overweight older people may translate into better quality of life, and the study underscores the growing need to explore long-term benefits of GLP-1 therapy beyond blood sugar and weight control.

As researchers explore the implications of obesity medications, understanding the reasons behind the similar outcomes of different weight-loss drugs has become crucial. For instance, a study from Cambridge examines why various anti-obesity treatments yield comparable results, shedding light on the complex mechanisms at play.
