When considering a vacation at Lake Somin, it's worth mentioning fishing. It also attracts many locals. Overall, it is a beautiful location where you can take many great photos. 

Description and History of the Lake

It is worth starting with the fact that Lake Somin is one of the most picturesque natural pearls of Volhynia, combining the beauty of wild nature, tranquility, and a unique atmosphere that attracts tourists, fishermen, and lovers of active leisure. This place is considered a true oasis for those who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of cities and feel harmony with nature. Somin Lake is popular not only among local residents but also among guests from various corners of Ukraine. Thanks to its clear waters, rich flora and fauna, and the availability of convenient infrastructure, the lake has become a favorite spot for summer vacations, fishing, and even ecological tourism.

Lake Somin is located in the Turiy District of the Volyn region, near the village of Somin. It belongs to the group of glacial lakes formed tens of thousands of years ago after the retreat of the glacier. The waterbody has an elongated shape and covers an area of approximately 235 hectares. Its maximum depth reaches about 7 meters, making it a medium-depth lake, comfortable for fishing and swimming.

The shores of the waterbody are predominantly sandy, occasionally overgrown with reeds and alders. Somin has preserved its natural pristine appearance, as there has been no intensive construction here, which is why the waterbody looks wild yet accessible to people. In the past, the lake held significant importance for local residents, as it provided them with fish and water. There are even legends that enormous pikes and catfish once inhabited the lake, becoming heroes of fishing legends.

Infrastructure and Recreation

Despite the fact that Lake Somin has preserved its natural authenticity, there are conditions for comfortable recreation. On its shores, there are swimming areas, small beaches, as well as designated spots for camping or resting with children. Picnics and outdoor activities are especially popular: you can light a fire, prepare barbecue, or simply enjoy the sunset over the lake.

There are also small recreation bases near the lake, where tourists can rent houses, boats, or catamarans. This allows combining traditional relaxation with more active forms of leisure. Lovers of active tourism often come here with bicycles, as the areas surrounding the lake are rich in picturesque routes.

Where is it located on the map?

Lake Somin is located in the Volyn region, near the village of Somin in the Turiy District. On the map of Ukraine, it is situated in the northwest part of the country, relatively not far from the border with Poland. The nearest large city is Kovel, which lies about 25 kilometers from the waterbody.

This location is well known among locals; however, tourists from other regions should mark it in advance on Google Maps. The coordinates of the lake allow for easy navigation, and access to roads makes it a convenient destination for trips even on weekends.

How to get there?

Of course, the main question remains how to get to the lake to relax. You can reach Lake Somin in several ways:

  1. By car. The most convenient option for those traveling from Kovel or Lutsk. The journey takes from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the departure location. It is worth noting that the last part of the route goes through rural roads that may not be in the best condition.
  2. By public transport. Buses run from Kovel and Lutsk to Turiyisk or villages located near Somin. From there, one can take a minibus or walk.
  3. By bicycle or on foot. For lovers of eco-tourism, this is a real find: local trails allow for an active journey combined with relaxation by the lake.

Therefore, getting to this location is literally possible for anyone. 

Fishing

Fishing at Lake Somin is one of the main reasons why tourists come here. The waterbody is rich in various species of fish: crucian carp, carp, perch, pike, bream, catfish. Thanks to its relative depth and the presence of reed thickets, ideal conditions for fish breeding are created, which makes the lake popular among both professional anglers and amateurs.

The best catches of pike and perch happen in autumn and spring, while crucian carp and carp are caught during the summer season. Many anglers stop here with tents for several days, combining relaxation with fishing. It is worth noting that sometimes catch restrictions are imposed, so it is better to check local regulations before the trip.

Of course, this lake has many interesting facts: 

  1. Lake Somin is considered one of the cleanest natural lakes in Volhynia, as it is mainly fed by underground sources.
  2. Local residents tell a legend that a whole village once sank in the depths of the water, and on quiet nights you can supposedly hear the ringing of church bells.
  3. The area of the lake is about 235 hectares, making it one of the largest in the region.
  4. Rare species of birds nest here, including herons and wild ducks, which is why the lake is often visited by ornithologists.
  5. Thanks to its picturesque landscapes, Somin often becomes a place for photoshoots and romantic getaways.
  6. The surrounding forests are rich in mushrooms, attracting tourists during the mushroom-picking season.
  7. The lake remains sparsely populated compared to more popular locations, so here you can find true peace and quiet.
