Honoring Ihor Turchyn: Kyiv’s Sports Palace to Receive a New Name
The Sports Palace in Kyiv is set to be renamed to commemorate the legendary handball coach Ihor Turchyn. This decision was made during the General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine. The initiative was proposed by Andriy Melnyk, president of the Ukrainian Handball Federation, who also shared that the Minister of Youth and Sports, Matviy Bidny, has expressed his support for the project.
The idea to name the Sports Palace after Ihor Turchyn dates back 33 years, coinciding with the year of his passing. As head of Kyiv’s handball club “Spartak,” Turchyn led the team to an impressive 20 Soviet Championship titles and 13 victories in the European Champions Cup. Beyond club success, he coached the USSR women’s national handball team to two Olympic gold medals in 1976 and 1980, and a bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Under his leadership, the team also captured World Championship titles in 1982 and 1986. Turchyn’s extraordinary accomplishments earned him a place in the Guinness World Records.
'The proposal to rename the Sports Palace in honor of Coach Turchyn was first made 33 years ago — the year he passed away,' said Andriy Melnyk.
