Sanctions Legislation Against Russia
Next week, the US House of Representatives is set to vote on a sanctions bill targeting Russia, originally introduced by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. This legislation would authorize President Donald Trump to impose 100% tariffs on the five largest purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas, as well as on five countries aiding Russia in circumventing existing energy sanctions. The US Senate approved the bill by a wide margin last month.

However, the vote on the bill might be postponed until November due to concerns about rising oil prices. US House Speaker Mike Johnson noted that the proposal faces opposition from Democrats and some Republicans. Meanwhile, Republican Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Brian Mast warned,
“if India and other buyers of Russian oil begin seeking alternative suppliers, fuel prices could increase.”
Democrats worry that the bill could grant President Trump additional legal authority to impose tariffs, potentially exacerbating challenges in the global energy market. As a result, the fate of the sanctions legislation remains uncertain amid ongoing debate.
