Pope Leo XIV Appeals for Ceasefire in Oleshky

Pope Leo XIV has called on Russia to suspend hostilities in the occupied city of Oleshky in the Kherson region, allowing the delivery of food, medical supplies, and the safe evacuation of civilians. This urgent appeal was made during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Pope expressed deep concern over the dire humanitarian conditions in Oleshky, where approximately 2,000 residents have been trapped without access to food, clean water, or medicine since April 2026 under occupation.

The Holy See’s press office confirmed its readiness to support peaceful negotiations. Pope Leo XIV urged Moscow to agree to a ceasefire that would facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries and the organized evacuation of civilians. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha also highlighted the critical situation in temporarily occupied Oleshky, calling on the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other international bodies to ensure humanitarian access and safe evacuation routes.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Oleshky

The conditions in Oleshky remain extremely difficult, with civilians—including children—lacking adequate food, medicine, potable water, electricity, and medical care. Dmitry Lubinets, Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, reported that Russia has not confirmed any willingness to arrange civilian evacuations from Oleshky. In response, Ukraine has initiated an urgent review of the humanitarian crisis in the occupied city at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

On October 4, 2026, units from the 11th Guards Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine named after Mykhailo Hrushevsky and the 34th Kherson Regiment successfully delivered humanitarian aid to Oleshky for the second time. The city has been under Russian occupation since the early days of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with conditions worsening since spring 2026 as Russia blocks civilian movement back to Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The Holy Father reaffirmed the Vatican’s commitment to fostering dialogue and peace, emphasizing the vital role of international support in resolving humanitarian emergencies.

Key requirements for a peaceful resolution include:

  • Provision of food and medical assistance,
  • Safe and voluntary evacuation of civilians.

The Pope’s call for a ceasefire in Oleshky sends a crucial message to the global community about the unfolding humanitarian disaster in Russian-controlled areas. With civilians suffering from severe shortages of essential resources, this initiative could drive increased international aid and pressure on Russia to improve humanitarian conditions.

Furthermore, Ukraine’s appeal to international organizations underscores the need for collective action in addressing humanitarian crises. This demonstrates Ukraine’s active diplomatic efforts to mobilize global support, which may influence the future developments in the region.

In light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Oleshky, it is crucial to note the recent efforts made to deliver aid to the region. Ukrainian drones have successfully transported nearly four tons of humanitarian supplies to the occupied city, highlighting the urgent need for assistance amid the dire conditions faced by civilians.
