Pope Urges Prayers for Peace Following Russian Strike on Kyiv Monastery

Папа закликає всіх до молитви за мир після обстрілу монастиря в Києві.

Pope’s Call for Prayer Amid Escalating Conflict in Ukraine

Pope Leo XIV has called on the faithful to pray for an end to the war in Ukraine. His appeal came after a new wave of Russian attacks on June 15, which included a missile strike on Kyiv. One of the hardest-hit sites was the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where a rocket landed on its grounds. The attack sparked widespread concern among Ukrainians and the international community.

The strike caused a massive fire on the roof of the Dormition Cathedral. Fortunately, relics and liturgical items from the monastery were reportedly evacuated in time. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) issued an official statement about the overnight strike on the cathedral but refrained from condemning Russia’s actions.

Deputy Prime Minister Svyrydenko confirmed that restoration of the Dormition Cathedral is underway. Meanwhile, the Church of the Saviour at Berestove, part of the National Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Reserve, reopened on June 17.

Ukraine’s Ongoing Crisis and Global Response

Commenting on the situation, Pope Leo XIV expressed solidarity with all those suffering from violence, stating:

“Disturbing news continues to arrive about the war in Ukraine, which keeps expanding. There are many innocent victims, rescuers have been killed, and churches and cultural heritage sites have been destroyed by fire.” - Pope Leo XIV

He also urged collective prayer:

“Let us pray together that this war may end. Let us ask the Lord to open paths to dialogue, to extinguish hatred, and to make a just and lasting peace possible.” - Pope Leo XIV

The situation in Ukraine remains tense, with the international community closely monitoring developments.

The Pope’s call for prayer underscores the need for global solidarity in confronting the violence and destruction wrought by war. The events surrounding the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra highlight how cultural and historical landmarks are becoming casualties of the conflict, raising alarm both within Ukraine and abroad. Restoring churches and preserving cultural heritage remain critical priorities for the Ukrainian state and the international community amid the ongoing hostilities.

As the conflict in Ukraine escalates, the Pope's plea for peace comes in the wake of devastating attacks.
