Statement from Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV has called on Russia to return to negotiations with Ukraine. His remarks followed a fresh wave of Russian attacks that killed at least 15 people and wounded over 70. The pontiff expressed his concern while aboard a plane en route to Madrid. He emphasized that the situation in Ukraine demands urgent resolution, stating, 'Too many people are dying there. We must put an end to the violence and war.'

Elected in May 2025, Pope Leo XIV has repeatedly offered the Vatican as a neutral venue for peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow. During his statement, he also referenced other global conflicts, including those in Iran and Gaza. At the same time, he criticized the rhetoric of former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Iran.

Kremlin's Response

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia has not received any official mediation proposals from the Holy See. According to him, the question of a negotiation venue has not yet been addressed. He added that President Vladimir Putin continues to put forward conditions unacceptable to Ukraine, and that Putin refused to attend a meeting in Istanbul.

“We need to return to negotiations. Pressure must be applied so that violence and war end and a solution is found.” — Pope Leo XIV

The statement has sparked widespread reaction in international circles, particularly given the current situation in Ukraine.

This papal appeal underscores ongoing global efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, which remains one of the most pressing issues in international politics. Despite calls for dialogue, the positions of both sides remain entrenched, making compromise difficult. As a neutral party, the Vatican could play a key role in future negotiations if Russia and Ukraine agree to engage in talks.

As the situation escalates, the Pope's call for dialogue comes in the wake of increased Russian aggression, which has raised alarm globally. For a deeper understanding of the Pope's growing concerns amid these intensified strikes, you can read more about his statements here.
