Reviving a Deserted Village in Spain

Maaike Geerts and Tibor Strausz, a couple from the Netherlands, have purchased Bárcena de Bureba, a nearly deserted village in Spain’s Burgos province, located in the Castile and León region. The price ranged from €339,000 to €350,000. Their goal is to transform it into a self-sustaining eco-community. The village had been uninhabited for 50 years and contains between 62 and 65 structures, all in need of restoration.

At least six families from the Netherlands are expected to join the new community during the project’s early stages. According to Maaike Geerts,

“Newcomers are invited to take part in the restoration work and help shape the emerging community.”
The initiative includes plans to develop productive land around the village by reviving agriculture and implementing long-term reforestation strategies. These plans involve creating a forest that combines fruit trees, vegetation, and crops designed to support sustainable food production.
“The approach is grounded in regenerative agriculture principles intended to improve soil quality over time,”
Geerts explained.

Challenges and Opportunities

It is worth noting that the village lacks modern utilities, and there are limitations regarding transportation access, healthcare availability, and infrastructure. Despite these obstacles, the Dutch couple hopes to attract others to their initiative, highlighting a growing trend of reviving abandoned villages in Spain.

This effort marks a new pattern in the restoration of deserted villages, one that could serve as a model for similar projects. Bringing in new residents will not only help rebuild infrastructure but may also boost the local economy and preserve the region’s cultural heritage. Moreover, the increasing interest in eco-friendly lifestyles underscores the importance of sustainable development in today’s society.
