Honoring a Ukrainian Paramedic's Courage

Katerina Polishchuk, known by her call sign 'Ptashka,' a Ukrainian paramedic, was presented with an award by British philanthropist Lord Ashcroft at the Warsaw Security Forum. She earned recognition for her unwavering dedication in treating wounded defenders of Mariupol amid the Russian invasion. Captured by Russian forces, Katerina was held prisoner alongside 215 other Ukrainian defenders until their release in September 2022. This prisoner exchange involved Russia regaining Viktor Medvedchuk and 55 of its captured fighters.

Military Journey and Forum Address

Katerina began her military service in spring 2021 when she joined volunteer ranks. During Russia’s full-scale invasion, she served as a paramedic with the "Hospitallers" battalion at the Azovstal steel plant, providing critical care amid intense fighting. Throughout Mariupol’s defense, she uplifted her comrades by singing a Ukrainian song, a moment later shared widely in video form.

At the Warsaw Security Forum, Katerina spoke out about Russian war crimes, the fate of prisoners, attacks on civilian cities, and the vital role European nations play in countering aggression. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha praised her recognition, stating:

“Katerina’s call sign is ‘Ptashka.’ Russia tried to cage her but failed. Ptashka proved stronger than Russia. If Ptashka endured, so will Ukraine. Let us work together to unlock every cage and secure freedom’s victory over tyranny.”

In Ukraine, a military embroidered shirt named "Oberih" featuring a unique pattern was also unveiled. Produced by a Ukrainian company, this garment symbolizes solidarity and tribute to defenders like Katerina who continue to fight for the nation’s sovereignty.

The award given to Katerina Polishchuk highlights the crucial international solidarity supporting Ukraine during wartime. Her personal story, alongside the bravery of many Ukrainian defenders, embodies the resilience of the nation. The introduction of the "Oberih" military vyshyvanka further reflects national unity and honors those battling for freedom, boosting morale among Ukrainians and their global allies.
