Mental disorders influence partner choice and the risk of passing them to children

A recent study published in Nature Human Behavior discusses how mental disorders can affect whom we choose to be in a relationship with, and the associated risk of passing these disorders to children. Scientists examined over 15 million people with various mental illnesses, from schizophrenia to depression and autism.

It turned out that when one partner has a diagnosis of a mental disorder, the likelihood of their significant other passing that disorder to their offspring increases. Possible reasons lie in the desire to understand the loved one as well as the influence of social stigma.

“If both parents face the same mental disorder, the chances of passing it to their child double. This is especially noticeable in cases of schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, and addictions,” the researchers share.

Psychotherapist Anna Sobchak noted that the number of individuals seeking help from psychologists is growing in Ukraine. However, she warns that the reason for this may not only be the concern for one's health but also the desire to highlight one's status.

According to the specialist, mental disorders have become a sort of trend, where therapy becomes a kind of 'fashionable' service, accessible not for everyone. Sometimes people seek not only treatment but also the opportunity to be trendy.

The study in Nature Human Behavior emphasized the importance of understanding how mental disorders can affect our relationships and the risk of passing them to offspring. The results show that this is a complex positive-negative effect that should be taken into account when developing support strategies for such families.
