The 1994 Passport Booklet in Ukraine

In Ukraine, a 1994-issue passport booklet becomes invalid if the holder fails to update their photo at ages 25 and 45. This update must be completed within 10 days of the holder's birthday. If a person does not paste in the new photo within one month, the document is permanently invalidated. Missing the 10-day deadline incurs a fine ranging from 17 to 51 hryvnias.

Replacing Your Passport and New Regulations

Furthermore, if a passport is lost or damaged, it can now only be replaced with a modern ID card. The standard fee for a new ID card is 618 hryvnias, with processing taking up to 20 business days. An urgent application costs 988 hryvnias. It is important to note that for pensioners this year, the validity period of ID cards has been extended to 50 years.

It should also be noted that the supply of old-format passport booklets is nearly exhausted. However, as one public opinion piece notes:

"No one will force people with old passport booklets to run and replace them immediately. There is no such procedure; they are still valid in Ukraine."

These changes in Ukraine's passport regulations signal a gradual shift toward more modern document formats, such as ID cards, which offer benefits like convenience and enhanced security. This transition is part of a broader modernization of citizen identification across Europe. However, despite the new requirements, a significant portion of the population still uses old passports, which could cause problems when replacement or identity verification is necessary. It is crucial for citizens to stay informed about the new rules to avoid fines and complications in the future.
