Pavlo Palisa Declines Appointment as Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States
Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, has turned down the offer to become Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, instead asking to be sent back to active duty on the frontlines. The ambassador position has been vacant since August 2023, following the resignation of Olga Stefanishyna, who stepped down voluntarily. Since then, President Volodymyr Zelensky has been actively consulting on potential candidates to fill this significant diplomatic post.
Potential Nominees for Ukraine’s Ambassador to the US
Among the contenders for the ambassador role were former Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and ex-Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. President Zelensky noted that Palisa’s American education and language skills, combined with his military expertise, made him a strong candidate for the position.
Pavlo Palisa: 'Send me back to the brigade immediately. I’m not leaving Ukraine.'
Background on Pavlo Palisa: Born into a military family, Palisa graduated from the Lviv Institute of Land Forces at the National University Lviv Polytechnic in 2007, and later completed studies at the Command and Staff Institute of the National Defense University of Ukraine in 2019. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Palisa was attending the US Army Command and General Staff College but cut his studies short to return home. In 2022, he commanded the 5th Separate Assault Regiment, and in 2023 he took leadership of the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, known as 'Kholodnyi Yar.' He was also involved in the intense fighting for Bakhmut.
To provide context, Olga Stefanishyna was dismissed from the ambassador post on August 3, 2023, and shortly after, on August 5, she faced corruption allegations from Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies. The High Anti-Corruption Court is currently considering preventive measures against her.
President Zelensky remains committed to finding a suitable replacement, recognizing the critical role this ambassadorial position plays in shaping Ukraine-US relations amid ongoing conflict.
Palisa’s refusal to take on the diplomatic role and his insistence on returning to active military service highlight the strong focus among Ukrainian military leaders on defense efforts against Russian aggression. The vacancy in the ambassador’s office continues to be a pivotal issue, potentially influencing the future of bilateral cooperation and US support for Ukraine during this challenging period.
