Pension for the children of fallen defenders: who is entitled to payments and their amount

Ukrainians have been informed about who is entitled to a pension in case of the loss of a breadwinner. According to the press service of the Pension Fund of Ukraine, under Ukrainian legislation on the pension provision for military personnel, children of deceased or fallen military personnel may receive a pension due to the loss of a breadwinner.



Who is entitled to a pension:



  • Family members who cannot work and were dependent on the deceased military personnel

  • Children receive a pension automatically, even if they were not financially dependent on their parents

  • Adult children up to 23 years old who are studying full-time

  • Orphaned children up to 23 years old (regardless of schooling)

  • Children with disabilities of any age, if the disability was established before the age of 18



The pension is calculated based on the amount of monetary support of the deceased military personnel.


Amount of payments


In case of death during the performance of military duties:



  • To one child — 70% of the breadwinner's salary

  • To two or more children — 50% each


In case of death from an accident not related to service:



  • Each child — 30% of the monetary support

  • Each family member who is entitled to a pension receives it individually



Additional payments


Families of fallen war veterans and defenders of Ukraine (with the appropriate certificate) are provided with an allowance of 25% of the subsistence minimum for non-working persons:



  • If the pension is less than UAH 7,800, an additional payment will be provided to reach this amount

  • If two or more children are receiving a pension, each is guaranteed a payment of UAH 6,100



Procedure for pension registration


The application process depends on the status of the deceased at the time of death:



  • If the military personnel was not a pensioner: first, you need to contact the military unit where he served. This authority collects the necessary documents and submits them to the Pension Fund

  • If the military personnel was already receiving a pension: you can directly contact the local department of the Pension Fund or submit documents via the online electronic services portal



Features for minors:



  • The application for pension appointment for children under 18 years old is submitted by their legal representative (usually one of the parents)


It has been clarified for Ukrainians that children of deceased or fallen military personnel may receive a pension due to the loss of a breadwinner. Conditions and procedures for obtaining pension payments, as well as the amount of additional payments for families of war veterans and defenders of Ukraine, have been provided.
