Pension Provisions for Ukraine's National Police Officers
The pension system for officers of Ukraine's National Police is governed by a specific law, No. 2262-XII. As a standard rule, pension payments are only initiated following an officer's official discharge from the force. These payments are not suspended if the former officer is subsequently called up for military service under a contract or joins special police units.
Types of Pensions Available to Police Personnel
Police personnel are eligible for three distinct types of pension:
- Long-service pension;
- Disability pension;
- Survivor's pension.
To qualify for a long-service pension, an individual must have accrued 25 or more calendar years of service at the time of discharge, or have reached the age of 45. In the latter case, the total insurance record must be no less than 25 years, of which a minimum of 12 years and 6 months must consist of service in the police, internal affairs bodies, or the military.
A disability pension is awarded regardless of service length if the impairment resulted from an injury, wound, or illness sustained in the line of duty. Survivor's pensions are paid to the non-working children, parents, and spouses of police officers who have died or been killed.
Time served in the police counts simultaneously toward the general insurance record, professional work experience, length of service, and state service tenure. The specific positions that count toward service length are clearly defined by law, ensuring transparency in the pension assignment process for National Police employees. This system is part of broader efforts to professionalize Ukraine's security sector following the 2014 reforms.
This legislation underscores the importance of social protection for law enforcement personnel who perform their duties in high-risk environments.
Given the demanding nature of police work, the pension framework aims to secure a dignified standard of living for retired officers and their dependents in the event of a breadwinner's loss. This forms a crucial component of the wider security and public order reforms underway in Ukraine.
