Automatic Pension Supplements in Ukraine
Starting January 1, 2026, a group of Ukrainian pensioners will automatically receive a supplement to their pension for insurance service exceeding the standard requirement. This right applies to those whose old-age pension was assigned under the law 'On Mandatory State Pension Insurance'. For pensions granted after October 1, 2011, service exceeding 35 years for men and 30 years for women is considered additional. This reform is part of broader efforts to modernize Ukraine's social safety net.
How the Supplement is Calculated
The payment amount is calculated individually. For each full year of service beyond the norm, the pension increases by 1% of its calculated amount. However, the maximum annual increase cannot exceed 1% of the current subsistence minimum for disabled persons. In 2026, this subsistence minimum will be 2,595 hryvnias. This sets a maximum monthly supplement of 25.95 hryvnias for each full extra year of service.
Therefore, with 10 full additional years of service, the increase could reach up to 259.50 hryvnias per month. It is crucial to note that only complete years of work beyond the norm are included in the calculation. The supplement will be applied automatically during the initial pension assignment or a scheduled recalculation, requiring no additional applications to the Pension Fund.
The introduction of automatic pension supplements for exceeding the standard insurance period is a significant step in reforming Ukraine's pension system.
This innovation may encourage citizens to remain in the workforce longer and ensure a fairer approach to pension assignment. Automating the supplement process will simplify procedures for pensioners and reduce the administrative burden on the Pension Fund, potentially improving its overall efficiency.
