Overhaul of Travel Discounts for Senior Citizens
Ukraine has introduced revised policies affecting transportation privileges for retirees. Free travel for the elderly now applies exclusively to trolleybuses, trams, city buses, and suburban electric trains. However, in Kyiv, out-of-town pensioners must pay for the metro. Starting May 7, 2026, many seniors will need to purchase tickets at standard rates, as simply holding a pensioner status no longer guarantees complimentary rides on the subway or long-distance trains.
As it stands, free transportation for older adults is confirmed only for electric vehicles and suburban trains. For taxis, trains, and intercity buses, full fares are required. Notably, the metro discount in Kyiv is available only to holders of the Kyiv Resident Card. The actual cost of a metro trip in the capital has reached 43.68 hryvnias, while the current fare remains at just 8 hryvnias.
New Refund Rules for Train Tickets
Additionally, starting May 7, 2026, updated regulations for refunds on unused Ukrzaliznytsia tickets have taken effect. If a passenger cancels a ticket less than 24 hours before departure, only the cost of the reserved seat (platzkart) will be reimbursed. Military personnel registered in the Army+ system can receive a full 100% refund at any time.
In Kherson, trolleybus services have been suspended from May 4 to May 10 due to safety risks for rolling stock near the depot. Electric public transport in the city will not operate during this period, potentially complicating residents' mobility.
According to Ukrzaliznytsia's press service, 'the closer to the departure date, the larger the share of the cost that will be withheld.'
