Pentagon Unlocks $400 Million for Ukraine: When the Funds Will Arrive

Пентагон виділив 400 мільйонів доларів на підтримку України: очікування надходження коштів.

Funding for Ukraine

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the release of $400 million in previously approved congressional funding for Ukraine. The money, designated for bolstering European defense capabilities, was freed on the day of a House Armed Services Committee hearing. Acting Pentagon Comptroller Jules Hurst noted that the funds have not yet been contracted, and their use depends on Ukraine’s decisions regarding arms purchases.

Criticism of Delays in Aid

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell criticized the Pentagon for delays in providing assistance to Ukraine. In an op-ed for The Washington Post, McConnell linked the situation to the policies of Deputy Defense Secretary Elbridge Colby, who has previously advocated for reducing support for Ukraine and NATO allies. The $400 million was allocated for Ukraine’s security support in 2026, but its actual deployment remains at the discretion of Ukrainian authorities.

'The funding was allocated for European capacity building, and as of yesterday, it has been released,' said Pete Hegseth.

This move marks continued U.S. support for Ukraine amid rising regional tensions. The released funds could significantly strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities if their use is promptly coordinated with the Ukrainian side. Such financial decisions underscore the importance of international support for ensuring security in Europe, especially given criticism from American politicians over the pace of military aid delivery.

The ongoing debate surrounding the Pentagon's funding decisions has raised concerns among lawmakers. Recently, Senator McConnell criticized delays in the release of aid, emphasizing the urgency of military support for Ukraine as tensions escalate in the region. Understanding these political dynamics is crucial for comprehending the broader implications for U.S. foreign policy and European security.
