US President Donald Trump is trying to convince Ukraine to hand over the entire Donbas to Russia to agree on a ceasefire before Christmas. Ukraine, on its part, is not ready to retreat until the remaining territories, including the cities of Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, are captured.
Even if Ukraine agrees to the transfer of the remaining controlled territories, the Constitution requires a nationwide referendum. However, under wartime conditions, this becomes practically impossible.
The Kremlin already controls part of the territory in eastern Ukraine, but battles for some cities continue. The withdrawal of Ukrainian troops can be politically complicated and militarily dangerous, as some military personnel may not support this decision due to unjustified concessions.
Analysts note that even if Ukraine withdraws from Donbas, Russia may not stop its invasion, using this as a way to strengthen its position in negotiations.
