Ongoing Negotiations for a Peace Settlement in Ukraine

Discussions to end the war in Ukraine continue, with future meetings potentially taking place in the United States. A Ukrainian delegation, which held two days of talks in the United Arab Emirates, has discussed key elements of a peace agreement with representatives from the United States and the Russian Federation. The meetings in Abu Dhabi occurred on February 4 and 5, where the Ukrainian side negotiated with all participants.

Rustem Umerov, the head of the Ukrainian delegation and Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, noted that unresolved issues were addressed, including methods for implementing a ceasefire and monitoring the cessation of hostilities. The delegations agreed to inform their respective capitals of the meeting's outcomes and to continue trilateral negotiations in the coming weeks.

Positions of the Parties and Next Steps

The Russian side has privately expressed its position, viewing the international recognition of Donbas as Russian territory as a component of any peace deal. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that Ukraine will under no circumstances cede Donbas to Russia as part of a peace agreement. He also stressed the importance of ending the war without rewarding Russia for its aggression, a key principle for ensuring genuine security.

According to available information, a new meeting within the negotiation process is expected soon, with subsequent sessions likely to be held in America. These talks aim to achieve a stable and peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. The war, now in its third year, has created a complex diplomatic landscape where international mediation is increasingly critical.

These negotiations represent a crucial part of the effort to find a peaceful solution to the war in Ukraine. Key issues, such as the status of Donbas and the terms of a ceasefire, remain subjects of intense debate between the parties. Further meetings, potentially hosted by the United States, could mark a significant phase in this process, as the involvement of major international partners may substantially influence the course of the talks.
