Трагедія на морі: Кількість загиблих внаслідок перевороту човна для мігрантів поблизу Джибуті зросла до 139 осіб, пошуки зниклих тривають.

Disaster Strikes Off the Coast of Djibouti

A boat carrying 305 migrants overturned near Djibouti’s shore, resulting in at least 139 fatalities and leaving 84 people unaccounted for. The tragedy occurred during the night of October 9 close to the town of Guhere, north of Obock city. Initial reports indicated 109 deaths and over 116 missing, but the death toll increased after more bodies were recovered, including at least 15 children.

The passengers aboard the capsized vessel were seeking safety, stability, and employment opportunities in the Gulf countries. More than 80 survivors—all Ethiopian nationals—were rescued and are currently receiving aid at the Migrant Response Center in Obock. Rescue teams are actively conducting search operations at the site.

Alexander Kuassak, a spokesperson for the organization operating at the scene, said: “This is a heartbreaking loss of life. Our thoughts are with the survivors and the families who have lost loved ones or are still waiting for news. Our teams are working alongside local authorities to provide emergency assistance.”

The Perils of Migration Across Dangerous Waters

Every year, tens of thousands of migrants from the Somali Peninsula travel through Djibouti and cross the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait en route to Yemen. This incident highlights the perilous conditions faced by those attempting to escape hardship in search of a better future.

The catastrophe off Djibouti’s coast is one among many that expose the risks inherent in migration via hazardous maritime routes. In recent years, the number of migrants journeying from the Somali Peninsula to Gulf countries has increased, driven by political instability and economic challenges in the region. This tragedy serves as a critical reminder for the international community to reassess policies aimed at protecting migrants and ensuring their safety during such dangerous voyages.
