The winner of the parliamentary elections in Hungary Peter Madyar stated that he will not hinder the implementation of the EU loan for Ukraine amounting to 90 billion euros, as this decision has already been approved at the level of the European Council. This was reported by European Truth.
EU Loan for Ukraine: Madyar's Position After the Elections
According to Madyar, the issue was essentially resolved back in December when EU leaders agreed on the financing mechanism. At that time, Hungary supported the format whereby it does not participate in the loan but does not block it for other countries.
He emphasized: «I am not sure what we are even talking about... Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia do not participate in the loan, so it does not concern our country. This is how it was approved».
Madyar emphasized that he does not plan to reconsider this decision, but intends to discuss the issue with European partners.
-
the EU loan has already been approved by the European Council
-
Hungary does not participate in financing
-
the new power does not plan to block the mechanism.
At the same time, the politician explained that Budapest abstains from participation due to a complicated financial situation.
Hungary's Policy Towards Ukraine: What Will Change After Orban
Madyar has effectively distanced himself from the approach of the current Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who previously blocked a number of EU decisions regarding Ukraine. The new head of government promised a more predictable policy.
«We will try to be consistent and honest in our communication and will not change our position every six months», — he stated.
Following the defeat of Orban's party in the elections on April 12, the EU expects that Hungary will no longer block key decisions, including financial support for Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia.
Against this backdrop, Madyar's position is viewed as a signal towards the potential unblocking of processes that were previously stalled due to Budapest's policies.
Let us remind you that the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico congratulated Peter Madyar on his victory in the parliamentary elections in Hungary held on April 12.
