Hypothermia in Winter: Stages and First Aid You Should Know

This winter is harsher in Ukraine than many previous ones, increasing the risk of hypothermia. Especially dangerous are temperatures in the range of +5 — +8 °C under high humidity, which can lead to cold injury. Wind also increases heat loss, making the situation even more critical. Children and the elderly are particularly sensitive to low temperatures, requiring special attention to their condition during cold weather.

Stages of Hypothermia

Hypothermia can go through several stages. The first stage is characterized by shivering, weakness, and trembling. In the second stage, surface cooling and confusion are observed. The third stage is the most dangerous: shivering decreases, which can lead to the risk of respiratory and cardiac arrest.

In case of hypothermia, it is important to act quickly and correctly. The main steps to take are:

  • Ensure the safety of the victim.
  • Move them to a warm place.
  • Call '103' for medical assistance.
  • Remove cold clothing.
  • Give the victim a warm drink.
  • Cover with a blanket.

At the same time, avoid rubbing the skin or immersing hands and feet in hot water, as this may worsen the condition.

The causes of hypothermia include:

  • high humidity;
  • wind;
  • presence of chronic diseases;
  • alcohol consumption;
  • belonging to certain age groups;
  • wearing tight shoes.

Knowledge of the stages of hypothermia and the actions to be taken when it occurs can significantly increase the chances of successful recovery and prevention of serious consequences.

Considering that this winter in Ukraine is marked by particularly low temperatures and high humidity, it is important for citizens to be aware of the risks of hypothermia and to be able to provide first aid in such cases. In particular, attention to vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly, can help reduce the number of cases of hypothermia and the serious consequences associated with it.
