In Ukraine, in 2026, control over disability pension payments has been reinforced. For some citizens, re-evaluation of health status has become a mandatory condition for continuing payments, and if they fail the check, the Pension Fund may temporarily suspend the payments. This is reported by 24 Channel.
Who may have their disability pension canceled
The Pension Fund explains that the disability pension is usually not granted for life, but for a specified period.
After this period ends, a person must:
undergo a repeated medical examination;
confirm disability status;
pass a new functionality assessment system.
If this is not done on time, payments may be temporarily stopped.
Ukraine changes the approach to disability assessment
Now the state assesses not only the fact of established disability but also how health status affects a person's daily life.
During the check, the following are taken into account:
work capacity;
ability for self-service;
ability to adapt to normal life.
Particular attention is now paid to men aged 25 to 60 with second and third disability groups. For them, repeated checks are often a mandatory condition for continuing their pension.
Can payments be restored after the check
In case of pension suspension, a person can undergo re-evaluation and submit documents for restoring payments.
The Pension Fund notes that the decision to restore the pension is made after checking all circumstances and confirming the right to assistance.
At the same time, experts and human rights defenders are already drawing attention to possible risks due to bureaucratic delays, the complexity of new procedures, and queues for passing commissions.
During the state of war, exceptions have been provided for certain categories of citizens. If a person cannot undergo a repeated examination for reasons determined by the government, payments can be extended until the assessment is conducted or at least for six months after the end of the state of war.
The reform of the disability assessment system has become part of broader changes in Ukraine's social policy. The government declares war on abuses and attempts to make the system more targeted.
For people with disabilities, this means the need to monitor the timelines for repeated checks more closely and to prepare documents in advance to confirm their status.
It is worth noting that from May 1, 2026, some Ukrainians with third group disabilities will start receiving increased pensions due to indexing conducted in March 2026.
