'Circle of Memory' Performance Honors Fallen Defenders on Khortytsia Island
On Khortytsia Island, within the Park of Honor, the poignant performance titled 'Circle of Memory' paid tribute to Ukraine’s fallen defenders. This event was a highlight of the international contemporary art festival GOGOLFEST Pokrova, held in Zaporizhzhia from October 1 to 4. By intertwining the legacy of the Cossack era with the modern struggle for freedom, the performance featured a dynamic blend of music, dance, fire shows, and symbolic rituals commemorating those who sacrificed their lives.
Key Highlights of the Performance
The central stage was formed around a symbolic 'source of life' where participants planted over 500 trees in memory of the fallen heroes. Beginning in darkness, the event opened with the hypnotic beats of Zaporizhian tulumbas drums, accompanied by the renowned band Dakh Daughters. Giant screens displayed traditional Ukrainian patterns alongside imagery of Cossacks and scenes reflecting the resilience of Ukrainians amid ongoing conflict. The atmosphere was enriched by choreographed dance performances and captivating fire artistry.
As a moment of remembrance, illuminated photos of the deceased warriors appeared, while performers gathered water from the life-giving spring to nourish the newly planted trees dedicated to those lost. The event concluded with a video projection of a church and the resonant toll of a bell, deepening the solemnity of the tribute.
“Today’s event is deeply emotional and significant. Its core purpose is to honor the fallen heroes, their comrades, and families. While there is sorrow, there is also hope and light. This is the story our performance is meant to tell,” stated Vladyslav Troitskyi.
Zaporizhzhia continues to actively engage in memorializing its fallen soldiers, highlighting the importance of such cultural initiatives in contemporary society. Running until October 4, GOGOLFEST Pokrova serves as a vital platform for honoring memory and nurturing Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage. Beyond paying homage to the dead, the 'Circle of Memory' fosters community unity around shared values and history—an essential act of resilience during challenging times. Events like this play a crucial role in preserving Ukraine’s national identity and collective remembrance.
