Sanctioned Russian LNG Heads for India
According to LSEG shipping data, the LNG tanker Kunpeng is en route to the Dahej terminal in western India. Its cargo, originating from the US-sanctioned Russian Portovaya LNG plant, represents what could be the first delivery of sanctioned Russian liquefied natural gas to the Indian market. This development highlights how global energy trade routes are shifting as Western nations impose restrictions on Russian exports.
The Portovaya facility, operational since 2022 on the Baltic Sea, has an annual capacity of approximately 1.5 million tonnes. Exports from this plant have been constrained by sanctions imposed after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with previous shipments primarily destined for China. While US officials have suggested India agreed to reduce purchases of Russian energy, New Delhi has not provided official confirmation of such an arrangement.
