Angelika Hanchuk to Lead Historic Antarctic Mission
Angelika Hanchuk has been appointed to lead the 31st Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition for the 2026-2027 season, marking the first time a woman will command the year-round team at the 'Akademik Vernadsky' station. This is a historic milestone for Ukrainian science. The director of the National Antarctic Scientific Center, Yevhen Dykyi, confirmed the appointment, highlighting its significance for advancing gender equality in the scientific field.
Hanchuk's Polar Experience and Background
Hanchuk brings substantial Antarctic experience to her new role, having served as a meteorologist during the 27th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition in 2022-2023. Since 2018, 13 women have participated in year-round expeditions and 11 in seasonal ones, demonstrating the growing involvement of women in Antarctic research. Antarctic research is crucial for understanding global climate systems, and diverse leadership strengthens these scientific endeavors.
Born in 1994, Hanchuk earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in meteorology and climatology from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. She began her career as a weather forecaster at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center in 2016. Further bolstering her qualifications, she earned the status of Master Trainer in Finland, a testament to her high level of professional expertise.
Hanchuk's leadership is a significant step forward, not only for her personally but for Ukrainian science as a whole. It demonstrates that women can hold key positions in scientific research, even in the extreme conditions of Antarctica.
This appointment symbolizes a shift in stereotypes about the role of women in science and may inspire new generations of researchers to pursue scientific careers. Given the increasing participation of women in Antarctic research, it could also positively influence the further development of gender equality in other scientific disciplines within Ukraine and beyond.
