First Auctions for Energy Import from the EU: Ukraine Received 804 MW for January
The import of electricity from the European Union to Ukraine has become more predictable thanks to the first monthly auction for the allocation of capacity on the borders with Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. The auctions started on December 15, 2025, on the JAO platform, with direct electricity supply scheduled for January 2026.
As part of the auctions on the border with Hungary, 460 MW was allocated at a capped price of €13.4 per MW. At the border with Slovakia, 172 MW was allocated at a capped price of €16 per MW, and at the border with Romania – 172 MW at a capped price of €10.82 per MW. The total requested volume amounted to 1815 MW, indicating significant interest in electricity imports.
Representatives of Ukrenergo noted that the auctions for the allocation of cross-border capacity will enhance the stability of the Ukrainian energy system. At the same time, Maksym Tyminenko pointed out that this winter will be the most challenging for Ukrainians since the full-scale invasion began. Thus, the import of electricity from the EU may become an important element in ensuring energy stability in Ukraine.
Integration into the European Energy Market
This step indicates Ukraine's desire to integrate into the European energy market, which may reduce dependence on domestic sources and help mitigate risks during the energy crisis. Furthermore, the successful conduct of auctions could lay the foundation for further development of cross-border electricity trading, positively impacting the country's energy security amid a complex political situation.
