One-Star Review: Critics Slam Elon Musk’s AI-Produced ‘Odyssey’ Episode

The initial seven-minute installment of the AI-driven adaptation of 'Odyssey,' produced by Grok Imagine under Elon Musk's initiative, premiered on October 23 and was met with overwhelmingly negative feedback from both critics and viewers. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian awarded the episode a mere one star out of five, citing poor graphic quality, awkward dialogue, jarring scene transitions, unnatural character designs, and the use of contemporary English as major flaws. Audience reactions mirrored these criticisms.

This project is a collaboration between London-based Wonder Studios and American director Dev Walker. Only three people, including the director, worked on the episode, which was completed in under two weeks with a budget of tens of thousands of dollars. Although Musk promised a full-length film by the end of 2023, it has yet to be released. In July, Musk stated that Grok Imagine aimed to deliver a historically accurate version of 'Odyssey' by year-end. The team plans to address concerns regarding historical accuracy and pacing, with Xavier Collins emphasizing,

“the goal is to make the final episode significantly better than the first.”

Reception and Other AI-Filmmaking Ventures

The premiere episode has amassed over 7.9 million views on X. Wonder Studios denied claims that their version was created as a counter to 'woke culture.' Meanwhile, other AI-assisted projects are also drawing attention. Turkish studio Ay Yapım released 'Castle Walls' on Amazon Prime Video, a two-episode series with each episode running 17 minutes. According to The Guardian, 'Castle Walls' is the first series on a major streaming platform to be created entirely with AI at every production stage. However, critic Luke Buckmaster gave the series a negative review, highlighting the unnatural appearance of the characters.

  • Ay Yapım emphasized that AI did not replace human creativity but rather expanded the creators’ capabilities.
  • China released 'Sanxingdui: Future Past,' a fully AI-generated feature film that earned roughly $180,000 during its first four days in theaters. It is considered the country’s first full-length AI-produced movie.

The poor reception of Musk’s first ‘Odyssey’ episode raises questions about the effectiveness of AI in filmmaking, especially when aiming for artistic merit. Experts and critics argue that such ventures require greater focus on production quality and the involvement of skilled creative professionals to prevent similar failures. This case highlights the need to strike a balance between embracing technological advancements and preserving traditional artistic craftsmanship.

The backlash against Musk's AI adaptation is not an isolated incident, as other AI-generated projects are also facing scrutiny. For instance, the recent release of a two-episode series by Turkish studio Ay Yapım has sparked debates about the future of filmmaking.
