Carpathian Economic Forum
During the Carpathian Economic Forum held on September 18-19 in Ukraine’s Prykarpattia region, Artem Nekrasov, the First Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, endorsed a Joint Declaration establishing the Carpathian Energy Education Network. This initiative brought together the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, UNICEF, multiple technical universities, and energy companies. The event attracted nearly 1,400 participants from 25 countries, including government officials, business leaders, and investors from Ukraine, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, and Slovakia.
The forum served as a platform to showcase 95 investment projects valued at over €42.5 billion, with 55 projects worth €8 billion specifically tied to the Ukrainian Carpathian region. High-profile attendees included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky, as well as representatives from central and regional governments and local authorities.
Joint Declaration and Future Outlook
The signees of the Joint Declaration committed to collaborative efforts aimed at developing educational programs, enhancing professional skills, and retraining specialists to address workforce shortages in the energy sector. A key focus is to engage youth, women, veterans, and other underrepresented groups in energy careers. Planned initiatives include:
- sharing best practices, teaching methodologies, and curricula;
- encouraging partnerships with international financial institutions and stakeholders.
Artem Nekrasov emphasized, 'Training qualified personnel is a vital part of advancing energy development not just in the Carpathian region but across the entire country.'
Deputy Minister Nekrasov also highlighted promising investment opportunities involving cross-border interconnectors, wind power, hydropower, and oil and gas infrastructure upgrades. Ukraine, in collaboration with partners from Slovakia, Romania, and Poland, is pursuing projects across all energy subsectors within the Carpathian region.
The creation of the Carpathian Energy Education Network and the signing of the Joint Declaration mark a significant milestone in addressing workforce challenges in Ukraine's energy industry.
