Call for Enhanced Support to Ukraine
During a meeting with the European People's Party Group at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Petro Poroshenko emphasized the urgent need to strengthen military assistance to Ukraine. He urged efforts to secure the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians detained by Russia, while insisting on holding Moscow responsible for its ongoing aggression. Poroshenko stressed that Russia continues to terrorize Ukraine’s civilian population, making it imperative for Europe to increase its support for Kyiv. He warned against trusting Russia’s promises to free detainees and called for sustained pressure on Moscow.
Strengthening Cooperation and Ensuring Compensation
Poroshenko highlighted the importance of deepening collaboration between Ukraine’s and Europe’s defense industries. He expressed strong support for establishing a dedicated tribunal to prosecute Russia’s crime of aggression and urged that this tribunal be fully operational.
“It is essential to ensure the effective functioning of a special tribunal addressing the crime of aggression,” he stated.
In addition, Poroshenko called for transitioning from merely documenting damages inflicted on Ukraine to securing actual compensation payments. He emphasized that enforcing rulings from the European Court of Human Rights is a crucial step in this compensation process.
He appealed to members of the European People's Party to leverage their influence within national parliaments to amplify military and political support for Ukraine.
“Investing in Ukrainian weapons production should be seen as an investment in the security of all Europe,” Poroshenko asserted.
Previously, Poroshenko urged European partners to accelerate the development of their defense industries and ramp up production of modern weaponry, particularly focusing on enhancing air defense systems, long-range missile capabilities, and the growth of European defense manufacturing.
Poroshenko also met with PACE President Petra Bayr in Strasbourg, where they discussed Russia’s accountability for its aggression, support for Ukrainian troops and veterans, the return of prisoners, and the strengthening of Ukraine’s democratic institutions. Summarizing the talks, Poroshenko noted, “Ukraine is holding back Russian aggression, while Europe must use this time to reinforce its own defense capabilities,” calling for decisive action from European allies.
As part of these efforts, Poroshenko handed over 15 upgraded Ai-Petri missile systems to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to help protect cities, underscoring ongoing support for Ukraine’s military in resisting Russian aggression.
