Kidney Transplant at Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital
A kidney transplant was successfully carried out at the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital for 17-year-old Stanislav, who had been dependent on hemodialysis for three years. The procedure took place during a blackout caused by Russian attacks. The donor organ came from a brain-dead patient in Dnipro, with the donor family consenting to posthumous donation. The teenager is now recovering.
Stanislav, a resident of Piatykhatky, began experiencing severe health issues at age 15 when his kidneys failed. For years, he traveled over 300 kilometers from Piatykhatky to Zaporizhzhia three times a week for hemodialysis. His mother, Lyubov, had already lost her elder son to the war, making this transplant a crucial milestone for their family.
Significance for the Medical Community
The operation was led by Dr. Yevhen Haidarzhi, head of the transplant and nephrology department at Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital. He commented:
“For a young patient, we deliberately waited for the most compatible donor organ. Once a donor became available, the team acted as quickly as possible to minimize cold ischemia time.” - Yevhen Haidarzhi
Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital is the only transplant center in southeastern Ukraine and ranks among the top ten in the country for the number of transplants performed. Despite challenging conditions, the surgery was a success and marked a significant achievement not only for Stanislav but also for the region’s medical community.
This case highlights the importance of organ donation and medical progress in Ukraine, especially during wartime and crisis situations. The hospital, which actively performs transplants, demonstrates a high level of professionalism and coordination that is essential for saving patients’ lives.
