Poppy Fields Near Kyiv: Beauty and Trouble

A recent post on Threads by blogger olik.kotsuba has drawn attention to a poppy field located on the outskirts of Kyiv. The landowner had sown the field with camelina for oil production, but wild poppies sprouted alongside the crop. This unexpected bloom has sparked a surge of tourist interest, with visitors flocking to the site for photo opportunities—unfortunately causing damage to the planted crops.

User macramelana confirmed that the field is situated in the Boryspil district. According to olik.kotsuba, the farmer is distressed by the influx of tourists, who not only trample the crops but also disregard personal boundaries.

“The man spoke to me and was nearly in tears. He talked about how much effort he puts into farming... his son is at war and has changed a lot,” the blogger noted.
She also stressed the importance of respecting private property:
“Dear photographers! If you find a flowering field, please check whether anything else is growing there besides the flowers,” she added.

Public Reaction

Ukrainians have voiced strong reactions on social media. Agronomists and concerned citizens have expressed outrage over the vandalism.

  • “I’m the daughter of an agronomist, and today I see every other post about the poppy field. I fully share the pain of the man who is growing his harvest with his own hands... Ukrainian agronomists during wartime are doing incredible work!” wrote user anastasiia.burtova.
  • “I only found out today that the field is private property, and the farmer is, to put it mildly, shocked by the behavior of these savages,” another commenter noted.

Additionally, on the night of April 29, incidents of deliberate damage to flower beds were reported in Kyiv. The vandalism occurred in the Shevchenkivskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts, specifically at Serhii Vynohradskyi Square, Kashtanovyj Boulevard, Lviv Square, Artem Sokhan Square, and Beresteiskyi Avenue. These events have heightened concern among local residents about the protection of green spaces in the city.

In this way, the situation with the poppy field near Kyiv has become more than just a symbol of Ukraine’s natural beauty—it has exposed social issues related to respect for private property and environmental values. This case underscores the importance of recognizing responsibility for preserving natural resources and honoring the work of agronomists striving to maintain agriculture even amid war. At the same time, the urban vandalism highlights the need for stronger protection of green zones and greater public awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.
