Rising Costs for Commuter Transport
Commuters traveling into Kyiv from surrounding areas are now facing substantially higher fares on private minibus routes. These recent price hikes have significantly increased passenger expenses. For instance, the fare for the Vyshhorod-Kyiv route has now risen to 60 UAH. A trip from Vyshhorod to the hospital on Bohatyrska Street costs 30 UAH.
Fare Adjustments on Other Commuter Routes
Other popular routes have also been affected by the new pricing. On March 23, the fare from the Lisova metro station to Brovary increased to 50 UAH. Separately, since March 13, the fare for Kyiv's circular suburban rail service has risen by 5-7 UAH. Meanwhile, starting March 14, the price for a trip on Kyiv's bus route №434 will be 20 UAH. However, tickets for the suburban rail can still be purchased at the old price of 15 UAH through the 'Ukrzaliznytsia' and 'Kyiv Digital' apps.
New fares on additional routes have also sparked frustration among passengers. For example, the price from Boryspil to the Livoberezhna metro station is now 130 UAH, from Vyshneve to the Vystavkovyi Tsentr metro station (route №721) is 100 UAH, and from Obukhiv and Boyarka to Kyiv is also 100 UAH each. The fare from Irpin to Kyiv stands at 80 UAH. These increases come as many Ukrainians are already managing strained household budgets.
Passengers have been vocal in expressing their dissatisfaction with the new tariffs:
Irena Vayter: 'Sorry, but this is beyond a joke now.'
Anna Tereshchenko: 'You can travel from Teremky to Troieshchyna for 15-20 UAH on municipal transport, but from Vyshneve, a distance of 1 km, it's 100 UAH?'
Consequently, the surge in fares for suburban minibuses to Kyiv presents a serious challenge for daily commuters, who must now adapt to these new financial pressures.
The widespread fare hikes on suburban transport reflect broader inflationary trends, likely connected to rising fuel costs and increased operational expenses for carriers. The public outcry underscores a need for authorities to review fare-setting policies and explore alternative solutions to ensure transport remains affordable. During a period of economic instability, considering public opinion when implementing new tariffs is crucial.
As the fare increases continue to affect various routes, commuters are left grappling with the rising costs of transportation. Notably, those traveling to Brovary are now facing a fare of 50 UAH, a change that mirrors the broader trend in suburban transport pricing.
