Championing Organ Donation and Its Impact

Author Yevheniya Kuznetsova presented her novel Ask Mieichka to Natalia Tymoshenko, inscribed with a heartfelt autograph. This meaningful gesture not only offers personal support but also highlights the critical issue of deceased organ donation. Natalia, who survived nearly 20 years on hemodialysis, received a kidney transplant from a deceased donor three years ago. Currently, she is pursuing medical studies with the goal of becoming a pediatric nephrologist to help others facing similar challenges.

Raising Awareness Through a Nationwide Campaign

Natalia’s journey inspired a public awareness campaign about the significance of posthumous organ donation. During September and early October, special bookmarks featuring a line from Vasyl Stus—"Through hundreds of doubts, I walk toward you"—alongside a QR code linking to organ donation information, were distributed at Book.ua bookstore cafes. This initiative coincides with World Organ Donation and Transplantation Day observed each September.

Since 2021, nearly 3,000 Ukrainians have received organ transplants. In just the first half of 2026, almost 500 transplant surgeries were performed, with over 70% relying on organs from deceased donors. Despite this progress, more than 4,000 people remain on transplant waiting lists, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced educational efforts and greater public awareness about organ donation.

This situation reflects the ongoing demand-supply gap in Ukraine's transplant system. Campaigns like Natalia Tymoshenko’s are vital for shifting public attitudes toward deceased donation, a change that could save thousands of lives. Her story exemplifies how personal experiences can drive social transformation and elevate understanding of essential health issues in the community.

As the conversation around organ donation continues to grow, it's essential to recognize the significance of initiatives like the campaign marking Organ Donation Day on October 17. These efforts play a crucial role in educating the public and addressing the pressing need for donor organs in Ukraine, further underscoring the importance of stories like Natalia's in fostering awareness and compassion within society.
