North Korean Military Supplies to Russia See Significant Drop

Satellite data confirms a dramatic reduction in the volume of military supplies being shipped from North Korea to Russia. In January 2026, only one Russian container ship was recorded docking at the port of Rason in northeastern North Korea. This marks a substantial decrease in activity, as from October through December 2025, such voyages occurred at least three times per month. The last docking prior to January 2026 was on December 21, with the vessel finally berthing on January 14 at a pier associated with arms exports. This development is being closely monitored by Western intelligence agencies.

Analysis of satellite imagery indicates that containers began accumulating in late December, but no new containers have been observed since January 19. In 2023, North Korea is estimated to have transferred between 6.5 and 8 million artillery shells to Russia, along with other weaponry including KN-23 ballistic missiles, Koksan artillery guns, multiple launch rocket systems, and mortars.

Potential Reasons for the Decreased Activity

Possible explanations for the slowdown in shipments may include:

  • Severely adverse weather conditions;
  • An intensification of diplomatic and peace contacts between Ukraine and Russia;
  • Internal political factors within North Korea.

These changes could signal a shift in North Korea's strategy regarding its military supplies to Russia. The reduction in arms transfers from North Korea to Russia may carry significant geopolitical implications, suggesting a potential recalibration in Pyongyang's approach. It also indicates that international pressure and diplomatic efforts might be influencing military relations between the two nations. Within the context of ongoing conflicts and negotiations, such shifts could open new avenues for a peaceful settlement of regional tensions.
