North Korea Expands Uranium Enrichment Facilities in Yongbyon and Kangsong Amid Nuclear Program Growth

Північна Корея розширює потужності з збагачення урану в Йонбjonen та Кансоні в контексті розширення своїх ядерних програм.

Advancements in North Korea's Nuclear Capabilities

North Korea is intensifying its nuclear ambitions by commissioning a new uranium enrichment facility in Yongbyon and activating an expanded section of its uranium enrichment plant in Kangsong. These developments were detected by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) through satellite imagery and open-source intelligence, as inspectors have not been allowed entry into the country since 2009.

The newly constructed building at Yongbyon is a two-story structure that represents the site's second uranium enrichment facility. It is designed to hold up to 28 cascades of gas centrifuges distributed across both floors. Meanwhile, the enlarged segment at Kangsong became operational in January 2026, following its completion in 2024. The IAEA has been monitoring these sites using satellite photos and publicly available materials, including official North Korean media images.

International Concerns and Diplomatic Tensions

North Korea’s nuclear expansion directly violates United Nations Security Council resolutions. In September 2025, the North Korean mission to the UN in Vienna declared that the country’s status as a nuclear power is irreversible. Notably, North Korea is not a participant in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Rafael Grossi, the IAEA Director General, expressed serious concerns regarding the ongoing operations of the enrichment facilities at Kangsong and Yongbyon.

Pyongyang rejects the IAEA's authority and condemns what it calls interference in its sovereign nuclear affairs.

The continued development of North Korea’s nuclear program remains a major source of international alarm as the regime disregards UN mandates while asserting its nuclear sovereignty. The absence of on-site inspections since 2009 has severely restricted global oversight, heightening risks to international security.

With North Korea demonstrating its expanding nuclear capabilities, the international community faces pressing challenges in formulating effective responses to this escalating threat.
