Deepening Military Alliance Between North Korea and Russia
North Korean military personnel fighting for the Russian Federation have gained proficiency in operating combat drones and electronic warfare (EW) systems. According to Ukrainian military intelligence, as of February 2026, Korean units are now conducting independent reconnaissance and surveillance flights to identify positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF). They are also using drones to direct artillery and multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) fire, enabling them to carry out precision strikes on border communities in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. This development marks a significant escalation in the direct involvement of North Korean forces on the battlefield.
Ukrainian Countermeasures and Strategic Impact
In an overnight operation on February 13, 2026, UAF units struck targets in temporarily occupied territories. The strikes disabled a 55Zh6U 'Nebo-U' radar station and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) command posts. This long-range air surveillance radar is a high-value asset, and its loss degrades Russia's air defense and detection capabilities in the area.
Andrii Chernyak, a representative of Ukrainian military intelligence, noted that North Korea already possesses experience in modern warfare technologies.
'Our intelligence clearly shows that North Korean servicemen are operating combat drones. And not just drones. Crucially, they have also mastered the use of electronic intelligence and electronic warfare systems,' Chernyak emphasized. He added that, at present, only three armies in the world possess real-world experience in modern drone warfare: the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian armed forces, and the North Korean army. This shared battlefield experience is forging new and concerning military ties.
The situation underscores the growing military collaboration between North Korea and Russia and the active deployment of advanced technologies in armed conflicts.
- North Korea's direct involvement in combat operations for Russia could significantly alter the balance of forces on the front line.
- Pyongyang brings experience in hybrid warfare tactics to the conflict.
- The use of drones and EW systems allows Korean troops to effectively perform reconnaissance and fire support missions.
- This presents an additional complication for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
- Such cooperation points to strategic alliances that could influence the future course of the conflict in Ukraine and the wider region.
