Peonies in Kyiv: Prices Soar as War Drives Down Demand

Ці яскраві півонії у Києві: Чому вартість зросла на фоні війни та зменшення попиту

Kyiv's Peony Blooming Season Begins Amidst Challenges

The peony blooming and selling season has kicked off in Kyiv, but these flowers remain expensive, and the ongoing war in Ukraine has significantly dampened demand. Seller Olha, who grows peonies on her plot near the capital, noted the stark shift:

“Before, all stock would sell out in hours; now, I often have to haul leftovers back home.”
She added that people used to buy flowers to lift their spirits, but “now, the war has given everyone entirely different concerns.”

Peony Prices Across Kyiv

Peony prices in Kyiv vary widely depending on where they are sold:

  • At the Silpo supermarket chain, a bouquet of five peonies costs 599 hryvnias.
  • Near Minska metro station, imported peonies go for 100 hryvnias each at the market, while local ones are 70 hryvnias each.
  • At spontaneous street markets, a single peony ranges from 40 to 100 hryvnias.

Olha also mentioned she has paid between 400 and 1,000 hryvnias for a single root of a new variety.

Popular varieties among Kyiv residents include Sarah Bernhardt and Coral Sunset. However, on Mother's Day, vendors were also spotted selling lilies of the valley—a species listed in Ukraine's Red Book of endangered plants—raising environmental concerns.

It is worth noting that since the start of the full-scale war, flower prices in Ukraine have at least doubled. This is due to various factors, including import complexities. According to lawmaker Halyna Yanchenko,

“a key scheme to bypass customs duties involves misdeclaring cargo weight, where only one ton is declared instead of ten.”
She added that full customs duties are paid on only one out of every twenty imported roses, which further drives up overall flower prices.

In summary, the peony season in Kyiv is unfolding under difficult circumstances, marked by high prices and reduced demand—a direct consequence of the war's realities. Amid economic instability, the appetite for flowers, once associated with positive emotions, has waned, and sellers face new challenges that impact their livelihoods. The pricing trends in the flower market reflect broader economic disruptions caused by the war and its aftermath in Ukraine.

The rising costs of peonies in Kyiv reflect broader trends in the local market, similar to the recent spike in melon and watermelon prices, which have shocked consumers with rates reaching 140 UAH per kilogram. As the ongoing conflict continues to disrupt supply chains, residents are feeling the pinch across various sectors, making it crucial to stay informed about the changing landscape of essential goods.
