Tax Exemptions for Sole Proprietors on Active Military Duty
Ukraine's State Tax Service has issued a reminder about tax relief for individual entrepreneurs (sole proprietors) and independent professionals during their military service. This exemption from tax payments takes effect from the first day of the month they are drafted and lasts until the end of the month they are demobilized. It applies to business owners who have been called up through mobilization or have signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Entrepreneur Rights During the Tax Holiday Period
Eligible entrepreneurs are fully exempt from the obligation to calculate and pay:
- personal income tax,
- the single tax,
- military levy,
- and the single social contribution.
“Entrepreneurs are released from the duty of accruing and remitting personal income tax, the single tax, military levy, and the single social contribution,” stated representatives of the State Tax Service.
The relief period is calculated strictly by calendar months, beginning on the first day of the month of conscription.
To freeze tax accruals, the entrepreneur must apply to the controlling authority at their place of registration. The basic documentation required to secure the benefit includes a written application and a copy of their military ID or another document confirming their mobilization or contract signing. This application is mandatory if the tax authority has not automatically received information about the individual's mobilization.
Only citizens who registered their sole proprietorship before their actual call to service are eligible for a complete write-off of tax liabilities. Importantly, these tax breaks remain in effect even if the business continues to operate. Service members are allowed to keep employees on their payroll and continue earning income while serving on the front lines without paying taxes.
This tax holiday represents a critical measure to support entrepreneurs serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as it helps reduce their financial burden and preserve their businesses amid wartime conditions. Given the ongoing relevance of mobilization and military service, these benefits can provide substantial assistance to the many Ukrainians who have stepped up to defend their country.
As the Ukrainian government continues to implement measures to support entrepreneurs during challenging times, it's essential to stay informed about potential changes in taxation policies. Recently, the tax authority's focus on P2P transfers has raised questions about the future of digital transactions and their implications for business owners. Understanding these developments can help entrepreneurs navigate their financial responsibilities effectively.
